Russian nuclear scientists dead
As the nuclear weapons treaties keeping us “safe” for the past decades’ time-out for various reasons (presidential withdrawal, end-dates, non-renewal), the new Cold War escalates at a frightening pace. The most recent price for this escalation has just been paid in the deaths of nuclear scientists and ordinary citizens in Russia.
Who is next? When will the nuclear weapons powers come together in conversation about their roles in creating a nuclear winter? When will they claim their capacity for preventing such a planet-destroying catastrophe? Putin wants the US and China to know Russia is developing brand new types of weapons. The Pentagon gleefully sees this “nuclear accident” as a way to scare Congress into authorizing enormous sums of money to develop a new class of nuclear weapons.
In 1983 a group of citizens in Seattle mobilized educational events attracting the participation of hundreds of fellow citizens to understand what was at stake as the first Trident nuclear submarine came into Puget Sound. Open Borders: A Personal Story of Love, Loss and Anti-war Activism tells my version of that citizen movement and how participating in the movement changed my personal life.
Where are you in this saga? If you want to learn more about the nuclear weapons issue today, you have two opportunities in September:
